Like a Grain of Rice: A Journey Shaped by Generous Hands
Born in a rural community, she almost had to take a gap year when her father, a truck driver, couldn’t afford college. With the support of Nicolas Home Ministry and the Leduna family, she graduated and is now in her first year of medical school, dreaming of serving far-flung communities as a volunteer doctor.
Kathlyn Shyne They say nothing happens by accident. Like a grain of rice that passes through many hands, my academic life was shaped by generous hearts from Nicolas Home Ministry. Born in a rural community with limited opportunities, I was blessed to be supported from elementary through tertiary education. They did more than help—they welcomed me into their home during the pandemic, allowing me to graduate with flying colors.
When my father, a truck driver earning 80 pesos per trip, suggested a gap year, I feared I would never finish college. In our community, a gap year often means giving up dreams. I prayed, holding on to the belief that God finishes what He starts. Through Nicolas Home Ministry and the Leduna family, I survived college and earned my degree.
Now in my first year of medical school, I hope to serve far-flung communities and someday return as a volunteer doctor.
